  2. 1 onion large chopped
  3. 2 tomatoes diced
  4. 1 green chili slit lengthwise
  5. 1 tsp garlic paste
  6. 1 tsp ginger paste
  7. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  8. 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  9. 1 tsp coriander powder
  10. 1/2 chili powder
  11. 1/2 garam masala
  12. 2 tbsps ghee
  13. half lemon Juice of
  14. to taste Salt
  15. coriander Freshly chopped for garnish

Instructions to make to make Dal Fry

  1. Wash the dal and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water and 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder. I let it go for many whistles because I wanted the dal to be mashable. Once it was done, I mashed it really well till it was almost a smooth and thick consistency and set it aside.
  2. Heat the ghee and add the green chili and also the ginger and garlic pastes. If you are wondering why ghee, trust me it adds flavour and makes this dish really yum!
  3. Next the onions go in and continue to saute till the onions go translucent.
  4. Add the tomatoes and also the masala powder: coriander, cumin and chili. Also add some salt.
  5. Once the tomatoes were all mushy, add the garam masala and the dal and I also added about 1/2 cup of water. Mix it well. Reduce the heat to medium low.
  6. Final step is to squeeze half a lemon and that brought it all together.
  7. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve with rice or rotis.
